Clinical Exclusion Policy

Northwest Counseling Services

At Northwest Counseling Services, our priority is to ensure the safety, appropriateness, and effectiveness of care for all clients. As part of our commitment to ethical and professional practice, we maintain a clinical exclusion policy that outlines the types of cases that fall outside the scope of services offered at our practice.

Exclusion Criteria

We do not provide counseling under the following circumstances:

  1. Criminal History

    • Individuals with pending or past charges or convictions related to sexual or violent offenses, or crimes against children, and have ever been on a sexual offender registry in any state.

  2. Diagnosis Requiring Higher Level of Behavioral Care

    • Individuals with a primary diagnosis or presentation that require more intensive, specialized, or structured treatment than what is offered in this practice setting, including but not limited to:

      • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

      • Antisocial Personality Disorder

      • Conduct Disorder

      • Explosive Anger or Intermittent Explosive Disorder

      • Substance Use Disorders/ Addiction Issues

      • Clients requiring anger management services as a primary focus

      • Schizophrenia

      • Schizoaffective Disorder

      • Psychosis

      • Sexual Diagnosis of any kind

Rationale

Our practice is structured to provide outpatient counseling services within a general clinical scope. The above-listed conditions often require:

  • Multidisciplinary interventions

  • Intensive outpatient or inpatient treatment

  • Court-mandated programming

  • Specialized forensic or behavioral support

Referring to these clients to more appropriate levels of care ensure their needs are properly addressed in settings equipped to manage complex behavioral or legal considerations.

Referral Process

When an individual presents with any of the above conditions or history, we will:

  • Provide a referral to an appropriate provider or agency equipped to offer the required level of care

  • Assist with transition planning if a condition is identified during treatment

Review and Updates

This policy is reviewed annually or as needed based on changes in clinical standards, legal requirements, or practice scope.
